The word Pentecost is Greek and means "50th day". Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, "and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues, and the Spirit enabled them to proclaim" (Acts 2:1-11).
There were thousands of Jews in Jerusalem to celebrate the end of Passover, and when they heard the strong noise coming from the sky, they all gathered in a large crowd. These people had no common language yet when the Apostles began to speak in tongues the people in the crowd were amazed because they heard the Apostles speaking in their native languages. This day marked the beginning of the Apostles ministry to make disciples and spread the Word to all nations of the Earth.
As all of you are part of the body of the Church, so today is your birthday as well. Happy Birthday!
Today is also a good day to celebrate the name of our parish as we are blessed to have Holy Spirit for our name. Additionally, Holy Spirit Catholic Community's 20th Anniversary is coming up this June 2018. Together with the parish pastoral council, we have decided to extend our anniversary celebration to a year of celebration instead of doing something for only a day. We are planning several anniversary activities for the months ahead, and we will share these with you soon.
In the meantime, we ask those of you who have pictures of parish life activities from the past 20 years and would like to share your photos with us to please let us know. Send us an email with the subject: HSCC 20th Anniversary to firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are hoping to gather enough pictures in digital format of a good resolution to create a 20th Anniversary album. However, if you only have printed pictures, we welcome those too. We will place a drop box with instructions in the Narthex starting May 26 to June 10th. More information will follow soon.
On the journey,
Fr. Dennis G. Lewandowski
