"This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad."
Today is the greatest of all Sundays! It is the day we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord. The Season of Easter begins today and culminates on Pentecost Sunday. We celebrate the next 50 days as one feast day, as one "great Sunday."
The word "Easter" comes from Old English, and it simply means East. This season reminds us that just as the sun rises in the East bringing the light of a new day, warmth and hope; during Easter, we celebrate the rising of our Lord Jesus Christ who is the true light of the world. Jesus Christ restores our joy and lifts us up to start anew.
The following excerpts are from Pope Francis's book Walking with Jesus: A Way Forward for the Church. – Loyola Press.
"Those who believe come to see themselves in the light of the faith they profess: Christ is the mirror in which they find their own image fully realized. And just as Christ gathers to himself all those who believe and makes them his body, so the Christian comes to see himself or herself as a member of this body, in an essential relationship with all other believers."
"God never tires of forgiving us; we are the ones who tire of seeking his mercy."
"Christ, who told us to forgive one another "seventy times seven" (Matt.18: 22), has given us his example: he has forgiven us seventy times seven. Time and time again he bears us on his shoulders. No one can strip us of the dignity bestowed upon us by this boundless and unfailing love. With a tenderness that never disappoints but is always capable of restoring our joy, he makes it possible for us to lift up our heads and start anew. Let us not flee from the resurrection of Jesus; let us never give up, come what will. May nothing inspire us more than His life, which impels us onward!"
