For the parent to read: Just as we go to Mass to be fed by Jesus in the Eucharist, your child begins to learn the rituals of gathering for a meal. At the family meal we start to gather in the kitchen as the table is set, and food is placed on the table. We begin with mealtime grace and family members share the stories of their day. At Mass the altar is set, and people gather to share their gifts to help in this celebration. We begin together in song and then listen to the stories of the people who went before us in the scriptures. When kids experience these actions in a family meal the mass begins to make sense to them. The Family Dinner Project did research and determined:

Recent studies link regular family dinners with many behaviors that parents pray for: lower rates of substance abuse, teen pregnancy and depression, as well as higher grade-point averages and self-esteem.

Now we are ready to get your First Grader involved.
